Decarbonization: it’s everyone’s business
In October, 2018, the UN-mandated Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a 400-page report on the effects of global warming. Designed to provoke decision-makers into action, the report called upon the international community to significantly reduce GHG emissions over the course of the next decade, and to do so by any means necessary.
Decarbonization and Air Quality form one of the five pillars of the Movin’On Summit. Through conferences and working sessions that link thought leaders and decision-makers of varying backgrounds, we dive deeply and try to resurface with concrete solutions that take us from ambition to action. Our aim is to inspire industry and various levels of government to take decisive action and make a real difference.
For instance, independent policy research institute IDDRI (Institut du développement durable et des relations internationales) hosted a working session to create a roadmap that helps state actors adopt decarbonization strategies for their national transportation systems. Researcher Yann Briand and participants tackled the challenges facing governments and worked to establish a plan that does not stop at short-term solutions, but rather provides promising strategies for years to come.
A sustainable car
Given that the number of cars on the road is likely to double within the next three decades, it’s imperative that automobile manufacturers start applying the UN Sustainable Development Goals to their operations. In a working session, FIA Foundation’s Sheila Watson and participants imagined a vehicle that wouldn’t require fossil fuels for its manufacture, or at any point throughout its lifecycle for that matter, including recycling and reuse.
The airline industry: the next big challenge
Looking skywards, a single transatlantic flight can emit as many GHGs as one car over an entire year. Although the airline industry has made great strides vis-à-vis energy efficiency in recent years, it still needs to implement new strategies to lessen its carbon footprint. A working session led by GGI consultant Xavier Tytelman, Air Transport Action Group Communications Director Haldane Dodd and participants talked shop on ways to reach this objective, including AI-powered flight path optimization, repurposing waste as an energy source and operational improvements on the ground.
